The central idea behind safety intelligence is that good tactical and strategic decisions can be made about safety at the top of the organisation. Yet there is a wealth and diversity of data for any aviation organisation, so the question becomes what to put in front of the CEO and company directors to help them make the best decisions. This question has been explored in Future Sky Safety by working with a dozen European Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), as well as a range of organisations located at Luton Airport, to determine answers to the following questions:

• What kind(s) of information should be on the safety dashboard?
• How to present ‘what you might need to worry about’ whilst avoiding ‘knee-jerk’ reactions at Board level?
• How should safety issues be visualised?
• How interactive should the Safety Dashboard be?
• Should the Board members be able to ‘drill down’ to the data beneath the Safety Dashboard?
• How frequently should it be updated and presented to the Board?
• When should items on the Safety Dashboard be discarded?
• What should be the balance between indicators that look at past events versus those that try to ‘look around the corner’ (lagging versus leading indicators)
• How can Safety Dashboard avoid ‘targetology’, where targets placed on safety KPIs can actually lead to the detriment of safety?
